Meet the Staff of Disability Services for Students
Martha Jacques Engstrom
Director

The director is in charge of supervision of Disability Services for Students. She coordinates services for students with physical, medical, orthopedic and psychiatric disabilities, students with acquired brain injuries, students who are blind or have vision impairments, and students who are deaf or hard of hearing. She screens documentation, discusses accommodations with students, and acts as a liaison with the deans of the university.

Support Services Coordinator


The support services coordinator meets with prospective students and new students regularly to give an overview of services available at DSS. She also coordinates most of the academic support services, such as note takers, tutors, and second tier testing accommodations. She meets with individuals and small groups by appointment to work on study skills, organizational skills, and time management.
 
Sarah Gibson
Department Secretary

The department secretary is the first contact for visitors and callers to our office. She provides answers and assistance to people who call or walk in with questions. She processes requests for priority registration, elevator keys, van service, and temporary assistance. She produces the hundreds of memos to instructors that our students use and is the person in charge of payroll.
Whitney Manchester
Learning Disabilities Coordinator

The learning disabilities coordinator is responsible for ensuring services for students with learning disabilities and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. She screens documentation and determines eligibility, and answers questions about documentation and accommodations. She writes letters of referral to the office of overseas study and the deans of the university. She is also in charge of our campus outreach program.
Elly Romer
Test Coordinator

The testing coordinator oversees the complicated process of arranging several hundred tests in our two test rooms every semester. She supervises our corps of student workers who serve as proctors and office assistants. She also takes care of event planning, database and website maintenance, and is the liaison to the Adaptive Technology Center.

The disability services coordinator meets with students who have physical, medical or psychiatric impairments to determine appropriate accommodations. He also meets with students who are deaf or hard of hearing, students who are blind or visually impaired, and students with acquired brain injuries. He is interested in issues such as the physical accessibility of campus and disability awareness.
